Abstract
The Spanish art critic José Moreno Villa wrote an extensive work in the fields of History and Criticism of art in Mexico. Part of this work dealt with Mexican art from the 16th to 20th centuries, where it found particular characteristics that differentiated it from European art. When identifying them, Moreno Villa described them under various concepts that can be included in “exoticism”. Therefore, the objective of this article is to identify some pieces of Mexican art that Moreno described as “exotic” and understand how these were related to art of Asian and indigenous origin. Above all, the article will focus on the cases that he studied for his book La escultura colonial mexicana, published by El Colegio de México in 1942, and on related ideas that he had written in various journalistic articles that were incorporated in his book Cornucopia de México, published in 1940.
