Abstract
Hans Christian Andersen is regarded as the father of contemporary children's literature due to the variety and breadth of his work as well as his engaging and profound narrative style. These qualities have made his work the most translated in the field of children's literature, as an indication that contemporary literature written for children lacks the pedagogical and moralizing formulas that were prevalent in classical children's literature. However, we have observed that several Spanish translations have been made with discursive intentions aimed at promoting axiological models and systems that reflect the dynamics and values of their respective sociocultural contexts. These differences also led us to discover that many Spanish versions of The Ugly Duckling were not derived directly from Danish, its original language, or are otherwise free adaptations of the original story. Therefore, in this research, we have utilized digital technology tools to enhance the corpus with which we are working. In this article, we describe the methodology and some obstacles we have encountered in comparatively analyzing the discursive effects of certain translations of this popular children's story by Andersen. We also describe the design of an interface, using the open-source programming language Python and the freely accessible Tkinter library, to invite collaboration from other researchers interested in the comparative analysis of Andersen's tales translated into Spanish.
