Abstract

We analyze in this article four science fiction anthologies that were published in Mexico. The first one, published in 1991, occupied the margins of the literary field and argued its importance with the fact that English science fiction was assimilated –and not only copied– by Mexican authors. The following anthologies, 1997 and 2001, tried to destabilize the center with the aimed of obtaining more literary capital. Their strategies were aligning science fiction with canonical literature and with fantastic literature (from the Southern Cone) and arguing again that Mexican writers had successfully assimilated this genre. Finally, Libia Brenda’s anthology from 2018 situated itself in a dual or bicultural center changing the margin and center dynamics. Brenda’s main achievement was the addition for the first time of an important number of female writers.
