Abstract
Abstract: This article proposes a reflection on the impact of fairy tales in contexts of conflict and oppression, specifically during the Spanish Civil War and the Franco regime. Despite these tales often reinforcing gender stereotypes and promoting a passive image of women, it is argued that they can also be powerful tools of resistance. The novel El mismo mar de todos los veranos (1978) by Esther Tusquets and the film El laberinto del fauno (2006) by Guillermo del Toro are examined to illustrate how death becomes a metaphor for the oppression of female bodies in these historical contexts. In contrast to the typical quest for a happy ending, the importance of facing challenges with courage and determination is emphasized. In essence, the article highlights how fairy tales offer a path to resistance and emancipation, allowing individuals to challenge established norms and fight for their own freedom even in the darkest moments of history.
Keywords: Fairy tales, gender construction, resistance, Francoism, patriarchy.
